SEASON Practices being in November and the season usually comes to a close in mid-February. YOUTH BASKETBALL This basketball program is designed to teach the children basic skills and sportsmanship. It is our intention that everyone gets to play. We ask that the child arrives at games and practices promptly. Playing attire should be appropriate: loose fitting shorts or sweats and a T-shirt (game shirt for games) and a clean, dry pair of sneakers. Sneakers should be changed into when arriving at practice, NOT WORN to practice. Sneakers don’t have to be specifically for basketball, but we ask that you take some time before each practice and each game to be sure that your child’s sneakers are clean from dirt and dry! We are working on a tile floor, moisture and sand make it very slippery. For your child’s and the other children’s safety, please take care to have abide by these rules. NO JEWELRY at practices or games. Players are expected to be in the gym during practices and games and should not be in other areas of the building. They are to remain in the gym until their ride arrives. Children should be picked up promptly after practice. For no reason should a child be left to watch another practice, the coach can not be responsible for additional children and coach their team properly. River Valley Youth Basketball and your town athletic association is not part of the a school program. The school allows the Association to use their gym for recreational purposes. For this reason, any children found outside the gym in the halls for any reason, will be disciplined up to and including suspension/termination from his/her team. If discipline is necessary during practices or games, a child may be asked to take a time-out on the bench. If the problem continues, a call will be made to the parent to come and pick up the child and a request may be made to keep the child out for a week or predetermined time; upon returning the parent should accompany the child. Players are there to play/learn basketball. Players should not be disruptive or cause unsafe conditions for themselves or others. We realize that sometimes there are reasons such as illness and special occasions that cause children to miss their practices. We ask that all parents make all efforts to insure your child goes to all scheduled practices if at all possible. Your child will get the most out of this program if they attend as many practices and games as possible. As you would expect, if your child habitually misses practices, his/her game time will be effected. We feel that positive reinforcement for making practice is playing in the games. We want to provide a positive experience for all, so everyones cooperation is needed. We hope that all parents and families will support the youth program in attending games when possible. Remember, we represent our town so please show our best sportsmanship in our attitudes, conduct and skills. When you cheer your team on, please always cheer the positive. Officials/Coaches are volunteers, please treat them with your utmost respect. Game schedules will be distributed in December. Pictures will be scheduled for mid-January.
